Dan Paul Smith, 82

M. on, May 9 , 2018 at Overbrook Rehab Center in Middleport, Ohio. Born September 25, 1935 in Racine, he was the son of the late Paul F. Smith and Josephine Hoback Smith. Dan was a retired school bus driver for Southern Local School District, he was also an avid farmer, and was an auctioneer. He was a member of the Carmel Sutton United Methodist Church, a former member of the Meigs County Fair Board, he founded the O.P.S.E. Chapter at Southern Local School District, and was a founding member of the Big Bend Farm Antiques . He is survived by his wife Donna Jean Smith whom he married on September 2, 1952 in Catlettsburg, KY., his children, Don Smith, of Racine, Bonnie (Bruce) Myers, of Reedsville, Faith (Terry) Varney, of Long Bottom, Tim (Karen) Smith, of Racine, Tammy (C.T.) Chapman, of Racine, and Ted (Krista) Smith, of Long Bottom, grandchildren, Jerry (Cheryl) Smith, Jenny (Matt) Ridenour, David Smith, Bridget (Brian) Heldreth, Paul (Arica) Smith, Amy (Neil) Nelson, Ed (Betsy) Smith, Eric (Jacey) Smith, Terry (Nicole) Smith, Kelly (David) Ferguson, Rachel (Tony) Hupp, Stacy (Nathan) Marcinko, Ryan (Shauna) Chapman, and Brittany Myers. Thirty one great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Larry Smith, of Middleport, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in the Cremeens-King Funeral Home, Racine. Rev. Larry Fisher and Rev. Bill O’Brien will officiate and interment will follow in the Gilmore Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Dan’s honor to the Carmel Sutton United Methodist Church, 31435 Pleasant View Rd., Racine, Ohio 45771, or Laurel Cliff Free Methodist Church, 41214 Laurel Cliff Rd. M. Tuesday, May 29, 2018 in the Holzer Senior Care Center. Born October 31, 1923 in Narrows, Virginia she was the daughter of the late Hogie Austin and Eula Jane Sadler Kirk.She was a homemaker and a member of the Elizabeth Chapel Church which, at the time of her death, was the oldest living member of the church. She married Kenneth E. Haner on April 4, 1947 in Narrows, Virginia and he preceded her in death on December 4, 2003. Dorothy is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Mike) Plymale, Deanna (Randy) Syrus and Anita (David) Smith, all of Gallipolis, five grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Ryan Cisco, Tanya Haner, Holly Haner and Zachary Haner, great-grandchildren, , Bishop Yester, Peytan Haner, Regean Moore, Hunter Moore and Jennings Roach. Also surviving is one brother, Harold (Phyllis) Kirk, Dublin, Virginia, daughter-in-law, Tammy Haner, Gallipolis and sisters-in-law, Daisy Kirk and Patricia Kirk, both of Virginia and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Mark E. Haner, in 1999, a grandson, Justin David Smith, in 2012, a great-grandchild, Dakota Yester in 2014, brothers, Marvin Donald Kirk and Joseph Daniel Kirk and a sister, Francis Helen Maples.Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Cremeens-King Funeral Home, Gallipolis. Officiating will be Pastor Alfred Holley and Pastor Randy Carnes. Chief of Police Mark Proffitt told the Sentinel that the death of the 79-year-old from Middleport was not suspicious, although the incident remains under investigation.In addition to the Pomeroy Police Department, the Middleport Police Department, Meigs EMS and assistant coroner Susan Mansfield assisted at the scene.
